Why is the Deputy CEO role important?

The Deputy CEO translates the group’s strategy into results across an entire portfolio, balancing financial performance with academic quality. The role directly shapes whether an education investment group grows sustainably, since a portfolio that chases returns at the expense of learning outcomes eventually erodes both.

Because the role sits between investors and educators, the strongest deputies speak both languages fluently, defending margins and academic standards in the same conversation. That dual fluency is what makes the role distinct from a purely financial or purely academic executive.

A hiring note from Excelon

Recruiter Insight

This role needs a genuinely hybrid executive: investment and operational discipline on one side, real respect for academic quality on the other. With our international reach and our financial services and education practices, we look for leaders who have run a portfolio and still understand what makes a school good, since deputies who lean too far either way tend to struggle.

The strongest deputies defend margins and academic standards in the same conversation.
