Dean
Search
Excelon Associates conducts retained dean searches for the colleges and schools inside a university: business, nursing and health sciences, engineering, education, law, and the arts and sciences. We work with provosts and faculty search committees to define the role and its discipline, source and vet candidates confidentially, and present a finalist slate, usually within three to five weeks.

A dean search is a retained executive search to recruit the academic and administrative leader of a college or school within a university. The dean is responsible for the unit's faculty, curriculum, accreditation, budget, enrollment, and fundraising, and reports to the provost. The search firm defines the role and its discipline with the provost and faculty search committee, sources candidates confidentially from inside the field, and manages evaluation through to appointment.
Excelon Associates is a higher education executive search firm founded in 2007, and dean search is the most frequent academic leadership engagement we run. We recruit deans for public and private universities, community colleges, and career and technical institutions across the United States and internationally, from a business school dean at a research university to a dean of academics at a multi-campus career college.
Deans turn institutional strategy into the daily work of a discipline. The modern deanship blends scholarship with management, budget ownership, enrollment responsibility, and fundraising, so a dean search has to find a credible academic who is also an effective executive. Our executive search fees guide explains how a retained engagement is structured and billed, and our Provost Search page covers the seat most deans report to and many move into next.
Why Is a Dean Search Different?
A dean has to be respected as a scholar while running the college like a business: owning a budget, raising money, sustaining accreditation, growing enrollment, and leading faculty who operate under shared governance. A candidate who is strong on one side and weak on the other will struggle, so the search has to test for both.
Dean searches are also discipline-specific in a way presidential and provost searches are not. The standards, the accreditor, and the candidate pool for a business dean, a nursing dean, and an engineering dean differ sharply, and the faculty committee will expect the finalists to carry the credentials of their own field. We recruit inside the discipline, and because strong candidates are usually sitting deans, associate deans, or department chairs elsewhere, we approach and vet them confidentially and protect their identities until the finalist stage the candidate and committee agree on. For how a retained engagement differs from contingency recruiting, read our guide to retained vs. contingent search.
How does a dean compare with the roles around it?
The titles overlap in conversation but not in scope. This is how the four seats differ in reporting line, span, budget, and typical prior role.
| Dimension | Dean | Associate Dean | Executive Dean | Provost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reports to | Provost or chief academic officer | Dean | Provost, sometimes the president | President |
| Scope | One college or school and its departments | A portfolio inside the college, such as academic affairs, research, or students | Several schools, a campus, or a health sciences division, often supervising other deans | The whole academic enterprise, including every dean |
| Budget authority | Owns the unit budget and its revenue targets | Delegated from the dean | Consolidated across the units the role spans | The institution's academic budget |
| Typical prior role | Associate dean, department chair, or senior faculty in the discipline | Department chair, program director, or senior faculty | Sitting dean ready to scale, or a vice provost | Dean or vice provost |
| Excelon search | You are here | Scoped inside a dean or executive dean engagement | Executive Dean Search | Provost Search |

Which Deanships Does Excelon Recruit?
Every discipline brings its own accreditor, its own candidate pool, and its own idea of what a credible dean looks like. These are the fields we recruit in most often and the standards each search has to respect.
Business and Management
Business school deans who can hold AACSB standards, grow graduate and executive programs, and raise money from alumni and corporate partners.
Nursing and Health Sciences
Deans of nursing, allied health, pharmacy, and health professions, with the clinical partnerships and program accreditation the unit depends on.
Engineering, Technology, and Computing
Engineering and computing deans who carry ABET review, research growth, and industry advisory boards while recruiting in a thin, competitive pool.
Education
Deans of education who balance teacher preparation standards, state licensure, school district partnerships, and enrollment in a changing market.
Law
Law school deans who manage bar passage, ABA compliance, clinical programs, and a fundraising base of alumni in practice and on the bench.
Arts, Sciences, and Humanities
Deans of arts and sciences who lead the largest and most varied faculty on campus, from general education and research labs to the performing arts.
Dentistry, Medicine, and Allied Health
Deans of dentistry, medicine, and clinical programs where patient care operations, clinical faculty, and specialty accreditation sit alongside teaching.
Graduate, Online, and Continuing Education
Graduate school and online learning deans who own program approval, enrollment growth, and instructional design across every college.
Career, Technical, and Trade Programs
Deans of academics, program deans, and campus deans at career and technical colleges, the sector Excelon was founded to serve in 2007.
Do not see your field? We have also recruited deans of students, deans of libraries, deans of the faculty, and founding deans for new schools and international campuses. Tell us about the unit and we will tell you candidly what the market looks like.
How Does Excelon Run a Dean Search?
A dean search follows the same retained structure as our president and provost searches, tuned to the discipline and to the accreditation standards the faculty committee will scrutinize. The five phases below mirror the timeline shown above.
Role and Discipline Profile
Define the role with the provost and faculty search committee: the unit's academic priorities, its budget and enrollment position, and the accreditation standards the next dean will carry.
Confidential Sourcing
Approach sitting deans, associate deans, department chairs, and senior faculty in the discipline directly, rather than waiting for applications to arrive.
Committee Screening
Screen candidates against scholarship, management, budget, accreditation, and fundraising expectations, and deliver written evaluations the committee can act on.
Finalist Presentation
Present a finalist slate with written evaluations and facilitate faculty, committee, and provost interviews, including campus visits and open forums.
Offer & Transition
Support the offer, including rank and tenure terms, reference and background checks, and the transition into the college.
Who Becomes a Dean?
Most deans rise through the discipline: tenured faculty who chaired a department or directed a program, then served as associate or vice dean before leading a college of their own. Endowed and full professors with a record of leading centers, grants, or accreditation reviews sometimes move directly into an associate deanship or a smaller deanship. Professional schools such as business, law, and health sciences also weigh senior practice and industry leaders when the faculty committee is open to it.
Because the pool is small and largely passive, we map it before the search opens: which associate deans have run a budget and an accreditation cycle, which chairs have the faculty standing to lead a whole college, and which sitting deans are open to a move. See our sample specifications for a dean of a college of nursing and a dean of academics to understand how the expectations differ by institution type.
What Can a Provost and Search Committee Expect?
We act as an extension of the provost and faculty search committee, never a replacement for them. The appointment decision stays with the provost. Here is what we bring to the table.
A confidential, discipline-credible slate
Sitting deans, associate deans, and chairs from your field, approached directly and protected until the finalist stage.
A profile grounded in the unit's realities
Provost, faculty, chairs, students, and advisory board heard before a single candidate is contacted, with the budget and accreditation picture written in.
Candid market intelligence on the field
Who is movable, who is not, and what the role will realistically take in compensation, rank, tenure, and start date.
Thorough reference and background work
Completed before campus visits so the committee deliberates on verified academic, administrative, and financial records.
Steady facilitation start to finish
From the first committee meeting through the open forums, the offer, and the transition into the college.
Promoted and indexed across our network
Every active search is promoted across our network and fully indexed, which extends candidate reach well beyond a single posting.
