Director of Digital Transformation – Sample Job Description

Excelon Associates has been retained to support this confidential search for a Director of Digital Transformation. Our firm works closely with institutions across the country to help them identify leadership talent capable of guiding growth, improving systems, and strengthening long term institutional performance.

The Director of Digital Transformation leads the institution’s efforts to modernize academic and administrative operations. This individual will design and implement a campus wide digital strategy that enhances agility, strengthens the student experience, and supports measurable institutional outcomes. The Director partners with academic leadership, IT, enrollment, finance, and external vendors to ensure the institution remains competitive in a rapidly evolving higher education environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create a comprehensive digital transformation roadmap aligned with institutional goals.
  • Evaluate current campus wide systems and identify opportunities for workflow improvements.
  • Lead adoption of new tools including AI supported services, analytics platforms, and modern learning technologies.
  • Partner with faculty and academic leaders to expand online learning, micro credentials, and hybrid programs.
  • Improve student service systems across admissions, advising, and retention structures.
  • Guide governance, project prioritization, and risk mitigation processes.
  • Oversee vendor selection, contract negotiation, and implementation timelines.
  • Ensure effective training, communication, and change management across departments.
  • Track KPIs and provide leadership with progress updates and data informed recommendations.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and digital innovation.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in information technology, business, education leadership, instructional technology, or related field.
  • Seven or more years of leadership experience in digital transformation, higher education operations, or enterprise technology.
  • Proven success leading large scale system upgrades or digital initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of SIS, CRM, LMS, and data analytics tools in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide change, communicate complex concepts, and collaborate across departments.
  • Experience managing budgets, vendor relationships, and multi phase project timelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing online learning programs or digital credentialing models.
  • Familiarity with data governance, privacy compliance, accessibility standards, and accreditation.
  • Experience with agile project management or similar frameworks.
  • Background implementing predictive analytics or AI driven student success tools.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with faculty, deans, and administrative leaders.
