Professor, Blockchain Technology

About the Role

Excelon Associates is partnering with a forward-thinking higher education institution seeking a Professor of Blockchain Technology to develop and teach courses in blockchain systems, distributed ledger technology (DLT), decentralized finance (DeFi), and smart contract architecture. This role is designed for a visionary educator who bridges academic rigor with real-world blockchain innovation.

The selected candidate will play a central role in designing modern curriculum that prepares students to enter one of the fastest-growing sectors in technology and finance. Courses will span undergraduate and graduate levels, exploring blockchain applications across industries including financial systems, healthcare, supply chains, energy markets, and tokenized assets.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an academically grounded blockchain professional, researcher, or engineer who is passionate about education and eager to shape the future of decentralized systems within higher education. Few institutions have the talent or infrastructure to teach blockchain effectively. This position exists to close that gap.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver undergraduate and graduate-level courses focused on blockchain systems, cryptography, smart contracts, decentralized applications, and Web3 architecture.
  • Collaborate with faculty across computer science, economics, business, law, and finance to integrate blockchain concepts into interdisciplinary programs and certificate offerings.
  • Mentor students on applied blockchain research, capstone projects, hackathons, and industry partnerships that connect classroom learning to real-world application.
  • Conduct scholarly research and publish in recognized peer-reviewed journals related to distributed systems, DeFi, tokenomics, and emerging Web3 technologies.
  • Stay current with global blockchain trends, regulatory developments, and evolving technical standards to ensure course material remains relevant and industry-aligned.
  • Support institutional efforts to build partnerships with blockchain companies, research consortia, protocol foundations, and government innovation hubs.
  • Advise on the development of institutional blockchain research centers, certificate programs, and executive education offerings in emerging technology.
  • Participate in curriculum committees, departmental governance, and faculty development activities consistent with the institution’s academic policies and accreditation requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Economics, or a related field. A PhD is strongly preferred for tenure-track appointments.
  • Demonstrated professional or research experience in blockchain technology, smart contract development, or cryptography at a level appropriate for graduate instruction.
  • Proven record of academic instruction, curriculum design, or sustained industry mentorship in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Strong communication skills and a documented commitment to student engagement, active learning, and inclusive pedagogical practices.

Preferred Qualifications and Technical Background

Research Focus
Active research agenda in distributed systems, decentralized finance, cryptographic protocols, zero-knowledge proofs, or blockchain governance with a record of peer-reviewed publication.
Industry Experience
Hands-on professional experience at a blockchain protocol, DeFi platform, fintech firm, or research lab. Track record of applied work alongside academic credentials is highly valued.

Familiarity with the following technologies is strongly preferred:

Smart Contracts
Solidity / EVM
Oracle Networks
Chainlink / CCIP
Enterprise DLT
Hyperledger Fabric
Layer 1 / Layer 2
Ethereum / Arbitrum
DeFi Protocols
Uniswap / Aave / Compound
Identity / Privacy
ZK Proofs / SSI

Why This Role Matters

Blockchain technology is reshaping global financial infrastructure, data verification, digital ownership, and institutional trust. Yet few academic institutions have the faculty depth or curriculum infrastructure to teach it effectively. This position exists specifically to close that gap at a forward-thinking institution committed to staying ahead of the technology curve.

The Professor of Blockchain Technology will help shape a new generation of engineers, economists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers who understand how decentralized systems can secure data, redefine trust, and unlock financial inclusion across emerging and developed markets alike.

By integrating blockchain into higher education at a serious instructional level, this role ensures that the next wave of innovation is grounded in both technical excellence and ethical responsibility. The course content, research agenda, and industry partnerships built by this faculty member will have influence well beyond the classroom.

The institutions that teach blockchain well today will produce the engineers, researchers, and policymakers who build the financial infrastructure of the next decade. This role is where that starts.
