Job Purpose
The Registrar is accountable for the strategic leadership and operational management of academic administration and student lifecycle services across the institution. This includes responsibility for academic regulations, student records, enrollment, assessment, awards, timetabling, and academic governance processes. The role holder will ensure that academic services are efficient, compliant, student-centered, and data-driven, supporting institutional strategy, regulatory requirements, and an excellent student experience.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Provide strategic leadership for academic registry and student administration services across the institution.
  • Act as senior adviser on academic regulations, policies, governance, and student-related matters.
  • Ensure academic regulations, procedures, and policies are fit for purpose and consistently applied.
  • Support senior academic committees and governance structures as required.

Student Lifecycle & Academic Administration

  • Lead all activity relating to the administration of the student lifecycle, including admissions, enrollment, student records, progression, assessment, awards, and certification.
  • Ensure effective oversight of marking, assessment, and examination processes in collaboration with academic leadership.
  • Ensure timely and accurate delivery of results, awards, and certification to support student success and employability.
  • Oversee academic timetabling processes and systems.
  • Lead administrative support for postgraduate research students, including progression, assessment, and awards.

Data, Systems & Compliance

  • Ensure high standards of data quality and integrity across student and course records.
  • Ensure effective statutory, regulatory, and internal reporting using accurate and timely data.
  • Provide management information and insight to support institutional decision-making and performance monitoring.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory, legal, and quality assurance frameworks applicable to higher education.

Partnerships & Collaborative Provision

  • Oversee student administration for collaborative and partner provision, ensuring compliance with partnership agreements.
  • Ensure effective coordination of enrollment, assessment, awards, and certification for partner-delivered programs.

People & Resource Management

  • Lead, manage, and develop senior academic administration staff, ensuring effective recruitment, induction, performance management, and professional development.
  • Foster a culture of service excellence, continuous improvement, and collaboration.
  • Manage budgets and resources in line with institutional financial regulations.

Transformation & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead and contribute to service transformation and process improvement initiatives aligned to institutional strategy.
  • Chair or participate in cross-institutional working groups and project boards as required.
  • Drive innovation in academic services through digital solutions and improved ways of working.

Representation & Professional Engagement

  • Represent the institution internally and externally at an appropriate senior level.
  • Engage with relevant professional bodies and networks to ensure sector best practice is embedded.

General Responsibilities

Person Specification
Education, Qualifications, and Achievements
Essential

  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification or experience.

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g., higher education management, law, operations, governance).
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., Academic Registrars’ Council, Association of University Administrators, or equivalent).

Knowledge and Experience
Essential

  • Significant senior leadership experience within a complex organization, ideally within higher education or a comparable regulated environment.
  • Extensive experience leading academic administration or professional services supporting the student lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of academic governance, regulations, and quality assurance processes.
  • Proven experience leading organizational change and service improvement.
  • Experience managing senior teams and complex service portfolios.
  • Experience handling sensitive, confidential, and high-risk matters with discretion and professionalism.
  • Evidence of influencing and working collaboratively across academic and professional services.

Desirable

  • Experience working across multi-campus or international operations.
  • Experience supporting collaborative or partner provision.
