Chief Academic Officer – Sample Job Description

The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) will serve as the primary academic leader for our small liberal arts college, overseeing all academic programs and initiatives to foster a dynamic and engaging learning environment. This role is pivotal in advancing the college’s mission by promoting academic excellence, supporting faculty development, and enhancing student success across diverse programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Academic Leadership: Provide visionary leadership to all academic departments, ensuring alignment with the college’s mission, strategic goals, and commitment to liberal arts education.
  • Curriculum Development: Oversee curriculum planning, implementation, and assessment. Collaborate with faculty to create innovative and interdisciplinary academic programs that respond to current educational trends and student needs.
  • Faculty Development: Support and advocate for faculty through professional development, performance evaluations, and resource allocation to foster an environment of academic excellence and continuous learning.
  • Accreditation & Compliance: Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and regulatory requirements, including program reviews and assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with senior leadership on strategic planning initiatives, particularly as they pertain to academic growth, student retention, and the integration of new technologies in the learning experience.
  • Student Success: Work closely with student affairs to promote student engagement, retention, and achievement, enhancing support services and initiatives that contribute to academic success.
  • Budget Management: Develop and manage the academic affairs budget, ensuring responsible resource allocation to support academic priorities and goals.
  • Community Engagement: Serve as a representative of the college within the academic community and with external stakeholders, building partnerships to advance the institution’s reputation and academic offerings.

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in an academic discipline from a regionally accredited institution.
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in academic leadership roles, with a track record of successful program development and faculty support.
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to the principles of liberal arts education.
  • Proven ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive academic environment.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience with accreditation processes and strategic planning.
  • Ability to inspire and engage faculty, staff, and students toward a shared vision of academic success.
