Assistant Professor – Nursing – Sample Job Description

The Assistant Nursing Professor provides classroom and/or clinical instruction in areas including, but not limited to, Nursing Skills Practicum, Simulation, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mental Health, and Pediatric Nursing and clinical experiences.
This position begins in Fall 2024. Applicants will be assigned a home campus.

Primary Duties Performed:

Full-time Faculty duties and responsibilities normally include:

  • Formal course contact teaching hours
  • Preparation and planning for instructing assigned classes in accordance with course objectives
  • Preparing and correcting examinations and other student work assignments
  • Scheduling student conferences to review individual student progress
  • Assisting in student academic advisement
  • Participating in departmental selection of course texts, instructional equipment, library books, and non-print resource materials
  • Participating in departmental development, evaluation, and revision of course objectives and outlines, instructional strategies, and systems of evaluation of student learning

Other Responsibilities or Assignments of Full-Time Instructional Faculty May Include:

  • Participation in other departmental, divisional, campus, and college-wide committees
  • Providing appropriate assistance to part-time faculty
  • Assisting in student recruitment, job placement, or transfer placement
  • Sponsoring student activities, groups, or clubs
  • Attending faculty meetings and institutional ceremonies or meetings
  • Participating in community activities

The College reserves the right to assign other normal professional responsibilities as may be appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Focus on med-surg specialties, with some flexibility for other areas.
  • Faculty may need to handle clinical and simulation teaching, with clinical supervision typically following an 8:1 student-to-instructor ratio. The role involves 9-12 hour days and flexible hours without a strict 40-hour policy.
  • Classes are day courses ending by 4 pm, with clinical rotations ending by 7:30 pm. Clinical days start around 6:30 am, and class days start no earlier than 8 am.
  • Class size capped at 48 students per cohort, with some natural attrition reducing numbers. The program operates across four locations, offering hybrid learning options.
  • Degree programs include the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree, RN, and LPN programs. The LPN to RN Bridge Course is managed by a different department, with possible teaching opportunities for interested faculty.
  • Willingness to train experienced RNs in teaching methods. Open to hiring instructors/assistant professors who specialize in various areas of nursing or can teach across multiple disciplines, including Nursing Skills Practicum, Simulation, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mental Health, and Pediatric Nursing.
  • Current program capacity is around 720 students, with plans for increased intake supported by funded expansions. Faculty are not on contract during the summer, except for elective courses.
  • Flexibility in candidate location relative to the four campuses. No requirement for scholarship work, but promotion involves committee work and student activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current undisciplined Missouri RN license and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • OR Current undisciplined Missouri RN license and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with a minimum of twelve (12) graduate credit hours completed towards an MSN.
  • Preferred backgrounds and qualifications include a strong preference for candidates with a background in adult med-surg. Assistant professors require 10 years of experience, while Instructor 2 positions require a BA with at least 12 credits in an MSN program, including those in progress.
