Medical Lab Technician Program Director – Atlanta, GA
The Program Director is responsible for the overall leadership, development, implementation, and evaluation of the Medical Lab Technician program. This includes curriculum oversight, faculty management, student advising, community engagement, externship coordination, and ensuring compliance with institutional and accreditation standards. The Program Director plays a key role in driving student success, program effectiveness, and continuous improvement.
General Purpose:
The Program Director oversees all aspects of the Medical Lab Technician program. Responsibilities include curriculum design and assessment, class scheduling, faculty hiring and development, equipment and supply recommendations, externship coordination, student advising and retention efforts, and community outreach. The Director also participates in instruction as needed, maintains field competency, and supports broader institutional initiatives.
Essential Responsibilities & Curriculum
- Teach assigned courses and serve as a substitute instructor when needed.
- Oversee the design, revision, and evaluation of curricula including course objectives, learning outcomes, instructional methods, and assessment tools.
- Recommend instructional materials, textbooks, lab supplies, and equipment, ensuring quality and safety.
- Manage assigned projects including orientation programs, accreditation support, and campus events.
- Actively participate in retention efforts by maintaining regular communication with students and administration regarding attendance and academic progress.
- Provide academic advising and support for students; train and mentor instructors in student support practices.
- Assist with establishing and coordinating externship sites; monitor student performance during externship placements.
- Identify at-risk students and refer them to appropriate academic support services.
- Ensure delivery of course and program learning outcomes as outlined in the syllabus.
- Oversee lab safety and sanitation as applicable.
Leadership
- Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate faculty members to ensure effective teaching and curriculum alignment.
- Document ongoing professional development in both field-specific content and educational methodologies.
- Chair at least one annual Advisory Board meeting and build relationships with community partners to support job placement, externship opportunities, and program awareness.
- Participate in regular academic and institutional meetings and workshops.
- Uphold and promote academic policies and procedures.
- Assist in program evaluation, strategic planning, and reporting activities.
- Ensure program faculty maintain current licensure, certification, and professional development.
- Promote a respectful and engaging learning environment for students.
- Address and resolve student concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Attend graduation ceremonies and institutional events.
- Conduct or assist in annual performance evaluations of program faculty.
Program Development
- Complete annual Student Learning Outcomes and Assessments.
- Participate in in-service training and discipline-specific professional development.
- Conduct annual performance appraisals with Campus Dean or other designated leadership.
- Maintain required professional credentials, licensure, and certifications as mandated by accrediting bodies and regulatory agencies.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred or required depending on accreditation standards.
- Minimum of three (3) years of occupational experience in the field.
- Minimum of one to two (1–2) years of teaching experience.
- Active professional license or certification in the field as required by the state.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to lead faculty and support student success.
- Commitment to ongoing professional growth in both the field and in educational methods.
